Peterhead Canoe Club is aimed mostly at river kayaking and on most Sundays throughout the year there will be a river trip of some sort going on. If you wish to take part it is best to have some basic skills first and also suitable equipment like kayak, paddle, wetsuit, bouyancy aid (PFD), helmet and cagoule. It is also best to go river kayaking as part of a group with an experienced and qualified coach. We have British Canoe Union (BCU) qualified coaches always willing to lead you on the river and hire you the suitable kit for a very modest fee.
River difficulty for paddlesports are rated from Grade 1 to 6 with Grade 1 being almost flat water and Grade 6 being at the limits of possibility. For more information on the river grading system have a look at this site here
http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/grades.htm . Peterhead Canoe Club members are regularly kayaking Grade 1, 2, 3 and 4 rivers and ocasionally rivers like the Moriston and Orchy with Grade 5 sections. The difficulty of most rivers varies very much with the level of water in them. An easy river at low flows can become a very much more serious proposition when it is flood. That is one reason to make sure that you are on a river with someone who knows what they are doing and the level of difficulty to be met. A very useful site for river levels is to be found here http://www.wheresthewater.com
If you wish to come on one of our river trips just keep an eye on the Forum section under 'River trips' and start posting when you see something you like.
Happy paddling!
